Chicken karahi is Pakistan's signature spicy curry dish, known for its vibrant red color, aroma of spices, and tender pieces of chicken. Karahi chicken has a rich history and has become popular all over the world.
The dish originated from the period of the Mughal Empire, deriving its name from the karahi, a thick, circular cooking pot traditionally used to prepare the curry. Karahi chicken is believed to have roots in Punjabi cuisine, from the Punjab region of Pakistan and India. It has since spread to become popular in countries like the UK, the US, and Canada with large South Asian populations
INGREDIENTS:
- Chicken (1 kg, cut into pieces)
- Onion (2 pcs, finely chopped)
- Tomatoes (4 pcs, finely chopped)
- Green chillies (2 pcs, finely chopped)
- Ginger garlic paste (2 teaspoons)
- Curd (light curd)
- Hot spice powder (1 teaspoon)
- Turmeric powder (1 teaspoon)
- Cumin powder (1 teaspoon)
- Red chili powder (1 teaspoon)
- Salt (to taste)
- Oil (1/2 cup)
- Coriander (chopped, for garnish)
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:
- Heat oil in a pan and add onions and fry till light golden.
- Now add garlic and ginger to it and fry for a few seconds.
- Now add tomatoes and mix well.
- Now add the meat pieces and mix by adding turmeric powder, red chili powder, hot spice powder, and salt.
- Close the pressure cooker and leave the meat to cook. Cook on medium heat for 25-30 minutes.
- When the meat is cooked, add the green chilies and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- When the meat is cooked and the oil comes to the top, add coriander and mix well.
- Your delicious Chicken Karahi is ready. Serve hot and serve with Naan. Enjoy the delicious food.
